My question is what is the ballpark number of backlinks you need to give you a boost in your google page rank? I heard 18 high quality backlinks will give you an increase of 1. Is this true or is it all about the quality.

There's no exact number how many backlink to update your PR. Google put more emphasis to anchor text from relevant and trustworthy sites

There as so many factors. But anchor text are important, of course the number of incoming links also. Just search google and you'll get more info.

I'd say if you were distill it to the 3 biggest factors, they would rank something like this ...

- Inbound links with keyword in anchor text
- Keyword ranking for sites linking to you
- Keyword on your page (title, header, and text)

Just take care of those 3, and don't do any funny business like invisible text or whatever, and you'll be in good shape.

a- Too much keyword repetition
b- Hidden content via text same color as background or CSS or other such methods
c- Javascript Redirects or certain other redirects
d- Cross linking bunch of sites to eac other in the same network
e- Doorway pages. Pages that are specifically written for search engines and cannot be found by your site visitors via your normal navifation menues.
f- PPC (SPAM/cas1n0) : Adult, cas1n0 related content
g- Duplicate content : watch out for those duplicate filters. Make sure your site doesn't have content from other sites or no one else has copied you.
h- Age of your domain. Brand new or less than 6-month old domains may be in the Google Sandbox
i- Participating in Link Farms or services that try to artificially increase your links by doing shortcuts
j- Cloaking : Showing a page to search engines different than what the users see based on their IP address

yeah why cas1n0 will be considered? cas1n0 are among of the most competitive keywords that many looks for....i think casin0s which play or implements blackhat strat will reflect against them...
