My website had a consistent page 1 google ranking for 6 years for my main keywords,but in the past year it's bounced around the listings to the point of disappearing

I have tried all of the usual methods to get back to the top,with no success

I have submitted articles,built up fairly good inbound links,optimized the index page etc etc,and the site is currently a PR4

At the beginning of the year I used Adwords briefly & picked up a better ranking,but since deleting the campaign,my site has slipped into obscurity

I still have high rankings with the other main search engines,but google has become a major problem

Does Google penalise sites that have stopped using adwords,or is there another factor that i have missed?

I think the other websites that competing the same keyword with yours have better optimized pages. And also they might have strong back links than your site has. The best thing to do is, just optimize your site again for targeted keywords and get some strong back links. I don't think that Google penalize sites that have stopped using adwords.

just something concerning your optimization and your competitors with same keywords. Adwords is another thing which is totally separate from SEO, content
keep working hard more and you will get back to the top.
