can someone explain why google ranking act like this?

I have a keyword, that listed on first page of google for 4 years, there were always stable for long time.
recently I found this keyword jumped to 3rd page sometimes, but when I added some links, they recovered to first page and without doing links it dropped agian. it lasted about 1 month, actually in my experiences if google anylize a site or a keyword doesn't take so long time, it should have been stable in the position where it supposed to be, for sure it 's not sandbox, can someone tell me , how can I do to make it done? thanks.

I think its natural to other sites that having dropped in rankings due to lack of building links or for not maintaining the regular link building activities for the particular site. It is recommended to update the site regularly for better indexing.
