Our google ranking has been stuck on 1 for quite some time. We have optimized our home page but do not seem to be able to budge the ranking on our

not only to directory submission but you can also create blog with related content and links from your main site. submit your blog to blog directory submission and social bookmarking site.

It doesn't look directory submission help at all (unless you are lucky to get listed in something like DMOZ). I have my site submited to many different directories, but so far I don't see any difference. May be high ranking relevant site backlinks will help, but it shouldn't be only one, it has to be many of them to get some results.

To rank in SERP you have to get backlinks from related sites.To get link you can create blog,post something in blog,also do forum postin,article submission and directory submission.Add some good contect also.

I think Directory Submission can help, but not on its own. It's just another leg of a complete link building strategy. The best to get links in a natural way is doing link baiting. Build something useful for your users and webmasters will link to you. Google are putting all their efforts in spotting paid links, so natural link building is the answer.

Building links is just a part of SEO specifically, off-page opt. but it's one of the important factors in ranking a site along with on-page opt.

Also see that the site linking you apart from being relevant should posseses good pagerank or should have enough potential to earn better PR score in near future.

You have to do following Steps if you want to get higher Ranking with good keywords in Google
(1) optimize your site's all pages if any pending.
(2) FREE Directory Menually submission in good sites.
(3) Classifieds sites submission.
(4) Article submissions in Good sites
(5) Forums posting in related forums
(6) social bookmarking
(7) after getting PR start link Building with related sites so Many sites will accept your link Request or You will face some problem in link building with good sites.
(8) pls check continue your results in google so you will get all the results and will get better progress to do in next steps with your website.

Backlinks are incoming links to a website or web page. The number of backlinks is an indication of the popularity or importance of that website or page.
