Google sitemap

A friend told me about google sitemap, anyone use this?
How does it really work? I have tried to find some good info on it but don't really get it.

sitemap is an organized links of page, where you can find all the important pages in your site that you want to crawl by Search Engines.. Usually,, all the links in there will be indexed in Search Engines..

so does it check changes to the sites pages? My friend said something about how often you update your pages determines how often google crawls it.

Actually sitemap will help to indexed fast sub pages even it is 500 or more.

I don't like the Google sitemap, as it provides Google a flat hierarchy of your site, which is bad. It's more effective to increase the popularity of your site and that way Googlebot will spider it frequently and will get the whole site spidered.

but don’t forget to mintion it in robots.txt file

I have read about it and am trying a few different things. I will eventually determine if I like it or not.

Site map can provide a general top-down view of all the sub pages of your site.. And agree to Ka-canor, that this can help indexed all the sub pages of your site.. But the great thing about it is that the searchers can easily access to any particular pages and or content.

Hi I am new to all this and trying to learn all I can about SEO, can someone explain to me what robots.txt file is? I have done all my metatags and page titles and am about to create a google sitemap, all info would be really appreciated, any comments about my website would also be appreciated.
