Is it still worth submitting your site to paid directories, or is Google really that much against them?

I dont think it is a wiser idea to spend a lot of money on the paid directiries . Instead creat some good backlinks from the targetted traffic sites.

I prefer free directory submissions for getting link.

Yes i agree free directories are good for backlinks but Paid directories always seemed to give you higher traffic returns,
So s it still worth paying into directories or not.

Submitting to Paid directories can be helpful. But Instead of spending in them, there are many HIGH PR directories which offers Free regular submissions. Try them out and your PR will increase.

Try writing an quality article related to your site or spend the money for one paid directory and buy one. You can submit your article to hundreds of sites a day and receive quality back links for free after getting your article written. I have had more success with articles than paid directories. Keep us updated on your success.

Hundreds of article submissions a day, it seams to me little to much. That could be considered as a link farm and will be penalized most likely.

While I respect your opinion, I disagree that article submissions are similar to link farms. First off, Google absolutely loves fresh and unique content. Furthermore, most article pages are going to have few outbound links assuming its a high quality article directory like ezinearticles.com. I've had great success with article directories and have seen significant improvement in SERPs regarding competitive keywords using articles so I still believe this is a valuable SEO strategy.

there are some good points here! Article submission is good because the search engines and in particular Google, loves new content, but ... if you are going to do "hundreds of article submissions a day" then it no longer counts as relevant "new" content as you are probably talking about hundreds of submissions of the exact same article and this is counted as the dreaded SPAM! Try relevant, unique article submission to a few high quality sites and i think that is going to help a lot more

well, if huge content is uploaded per day, but from different ips, its still valid

I am always looking for good directories and even though a lot of them have had their PR dropped recently there are loads still out there worth submitting, both free and paid.

When a site gets listed in the most relevant category this also helps so if you can only afford to spend on a few directories, spend more time getting the exact match of the category that will represent your site.

Why go for paid one when you can acquire free links through submitting to free directories? there's a lot of free over the net.. Just google it!

Most of pr greater than 4-5 are paid. Only few are free.

ofcourse! when they get their pr improved themselves, they shift to paid from free service
