I think you are right making equal number of back link that are getting deleted is really important. If you are not going to replace those dead links then this may harm to your search engine techniques.

Fluctuation is very common in rankings. There are many big websites, each and every website want to see them on the top. And it is not possible that if this month your ranking is 8 and you are not doing a bit of white hat seo then also your ranking will remain same in next month.

Rank fluctuation is obviously common in present era. And you can also take it as a natural seo process. There are many seo firms that keep on promoting websites. And if their indexed back link increases then their page rank will also increase so it is very common.

Yes! It is really common nowadays. Thatswhy one must create backlinks with really good and unique content so that they don't get deleted. Also proper indexing of these links is also very necessary.
