Generally speaking what is the rule of thumb for keyword density ?

Your optimum keyword density should be between 2%-8%

It's quite high. If you use 10%> google will penalize you.
Optimum keyword density depend on your page content.

minimum keyword density is 2-3%, if your site had more than that, the search engine will see your site as spamming.

Keyword density is really not a great factor any more... Google (and I suspect the others) check keywords against the theme of the site and the context of the sentence and paragraph that it is in. Keyword density isn't something that I use anymore. But a few years back when it made sense to use it, there was a range of 2% - 8% that was justified, but 3%-4% was pretty common.
I try to place keywords in sentences where the rest of the sentence needs it and it has connecting words & synonyms.... SEO consultants not only have to think like a search engine and a mathematician... but now have to think like an Linguist!!

Keyword Density:
The measurement of how frequently any given keyword appears within a web page. Too high a density can result in a web page being classified as spam while too low a density will cause a page to not be indexed as well for the given keyword.

yes, it should be 3-7% . But I've handled a site before that has above the average keyword density but still rocks on its rankings and haven't penalized by the SE's.

1 keyword per 150 words for a 400-500 word article
