i have this searchstatus plugin on my firefox to display page rank. my father writes a blog for 6 months, he updates the page twice a week, he receives ~40 visitors a day, the blog is linked from other websites, but the pagerank is still zero. does it take some time for pagerank to update or does it depend on other things?

The blog written by your father doesn't have such a big age to expect significant PR or even any PR at all. As of now it's not really easy to get PR, but you shouldn't warry about it. PR doesn't have a big importance in terms of some benefits for your website or blog. What 's really matter is SERP, another words, search result by your major keywords is important, how far from the top of the search page your site or blog is located.
Keep doing what you usually do, update content, build your backlinks with relevant sites, keep doing promotions, etc. This is the only way to get better SERP results. Pretty soon you will see changes in you PR too.
Have a great day

Good it has now a PR of 0 you've left the PageRank status n/a already or the gray bar so in 6 months that would be 2 PageRank update already, the usual way gather some links pointing to your site or apply PR sculpting.

Page Rank depends on the no. of backlinks that you get from other sites. hence start working on building links. PR will improve.

There are some of the ways to enhance your page rank
1.Check out my list of DoFollow Blogs. You’ll see a better description of what that means on by visiting that page.
2.When leaving a comment on a DoFollow blog, make sure it’s sincere!
3.When you are about to leave a comment, put one of your main keywords in the “name” field.
4.Content, content, content! Without good content, a blog is doomed to fail. Google loves unique content and will index it pretty quick, especially if it contains good keywords and an original perspective.
5.directory submissions
6.Article Marketing
