I think 500 urls, if you have more then 500, you can prepare another file.

The Google documentation for XML sitemaps shows that you can have no more than 50,000 per sitemap, and can use more than one sitemap if your sitemap is larger than 10MB
That would be one HUGE site -- I think most of us will be OK with just one sitemap

Hi
You can provide 50,000 sitemap links and the size must not exclude 10 MB totally. If the sitemap links crosses these terms, you will have to create a new sitemap file. You can create multiple sitemap files.

When you reach the 50,000 limit in your XML file you need to pick and choose which ones you will place in the sitemap. Its best to turn off a whole subdirectory if you know nothing is important in there.

yes based on the google webmaster guideline it must not exceed to 10 mb in size and 50,000 "urls"... the best way to do when you reach such number of "urls" is to break them into several smaller sitemaps..making sure that your server is not overloaded by serving large file to Google...
tips for XML sitemap:
# The XML format is now supported at least by Google, Yahoo, Live Search, Ask...
# XML sitemaps are required if you use dynamic links for your articles (JavaScript links).
# Don't use an XML sitemap if all pages of your site are already indexed at Google.
# If some pages in your website are not indexed yet, give these pages a higher priority in the XML sitemap (the "priority" tag).
# To let a page ignored by crawlers of search engines you should use a Robots.txt file or the "ROBOTS" meta tag with value noindex.
# The sitemap is for the whole site. Don't create a map with only links of files that are not indexed by Google.
# You can omit optional tags (priority, lastmod, changefreq) if you are not sure you need for them.
# The time option (in lastmod tag) is for very big websites! Only date is useful in most cases.
# A sitemap with all pages same higher priority and faster frequency is of null interest for Google. Give to pages the lower priority and the slower frequency if they are already indexed and not frequently changed.
# For videos, a tag has been added to the sitemap protocol.

that is one huge file, but mostly article directories has this many pages on them, there is also a limit of 1,000 sitemap files if you want it uploaded in bulk on webmaster tools
