Is there a standard period of time between google indexing? How often do google bots index a site? Is there anyway to increase that number?

Indexing time depends on the popularity/authority of the site. It can happen in a matter of minutes. My bookmarked pages from Digg, for example, get indexed by Google after a few minutes.

i am agree , yes the indexing of your page is depends on the popularity of the website and traffic for that website, my pages indexed in within 5-10 minutes after post.

It will always depend on how often you update your site content. Google mostly crawl sites that are updated almost every day more often.

Google bots not always index only updated sites. My old site hadn't been updated for long time. But bots came every day.

Does it have anything to do with the pagerank (i.e. the higher the pagerank the more important google interprets it and the more frequently it gets trawled)?

Any advice to this end will be appreciated as our site is struggling to increase the pagerank but it seems a vicious circle...

If you are building up too many website ( i mean if you own a company of webdesign) then you need can increase the indexing of a website by increasing backlinks to every website. Submit them into directories etc.

Alternate - Generate sitemap for every website and submit it to Google's webmaster tool.

Try to sign up for a Google Webmaster Tool account, there is an option there where you can set indexing rate for your site.

It also depend on whether your site is google friendly or not.

It completely depends on several factors like content, PR etc. Cant tell you any specific time as it varies from site to site. Some site get indexed in hours and some after days.

i think making all your meta and alt tags in good form it'll make your site SE friendly and i think using site map or RSS feeds can help in indexing your site fast

Creating site map and social media Really can help you to get index fast , See google like to update big sites very often , So if you are having back link from site that have pr6 or above will help you alot to get index fast your site
