This is a pretty broad questions so I'll try and answer it the best I can, there are three main methods for increasing your PR value for your start-up:

1. Actively build/create/do something which is PR worthy, I don't just mean some great product, but a product people are using, something that is "Disruptive", bold, interesting exciting, raise a tonne of money, help people etc. This though is easier said than done, and to be honest most companies are not doing this at least not all of the time and so we move on to the following points:

2. Piggy back on a hot topic, however you do it, regardless of how tangential the connection is, link your self to amazing people, cool technologies (self driving cars, big-data are current examples, if this was 2011 then it would be social media etc.), then you will be more press worthy as you will fit the current news agenda.

3. Lastly and most importantly, PR is often a self fulfilling prophecy (be carful though as it can backfire if you're all substance and no style), the more PR you generate, the more buzz and the more you're able to spread the word to more it will continue. So on this note I would recommend to building out relationships with journalists early, long before you're ready to actually get PR, and then start messaging them you're updates, as you grow your network here, the more your PR value will accumulate and the easier and better press you will be able to generate.

Since the majority of sites we track are already mobile-friendly, it's likely the impact of the latest update was small.
