I am hearing some sites that are doing a lot of media buys and Text link advertising have lost rankings. However, my guess is that Google can only detect certain type of ads, such as those coming from site with too many outgoing links.

I've also heard that if too much of your incoming anchor text is the same you might be penalized.
OH yes, that is true. I have seen that happen to some of my sites.

I have seen some sites fall in the rankings, but they were spamming the engines. As the algo changes some rise, and some fall.

I agree with you but sometimes spamming site gets rank well when algo changed.........

Since a year gets PR5 and nothing changes
