The most important in optimizing your images in the name of your image and in alt tags should be relevant on the image itself.

Offer free samples of your portfolio and put your link details somewhere noticeable on the image. Good description above or below of the image as well as another sentence of description for alt tag would help too.

Don't forget to put alt tags to all the graphics you put in your site. Make sure they contain all your target keywords. That should be part of your onpage optimization.

The graphics should be pleasing to the eyes of the readers and should catch their attention. However, it should not make your site load slowly, and you should put alt attributes in your important images.
