Sorry for the newbie questions, but I'm trying to figure out how this google ranking works. After doing some research it seems that rankings are mostly based upon content in the page such as title, headings, content etc. As well, ranking is affected by page popularity (PageRank). Finally, time for the search engine to grab your page and the new PageRank seems to be a factor as well. Seems simple enough.

Any insights from knowledgeable SEOs would be appreciated.

I'm not sure what fixed this, but we seem to be back with a more realistic rating. I did two things to try and rectify it.

1) Removed all white text links (aka hidden links) that point to this site from the internet.
2) Sent a note to google asking why the poor ranking.

Two days after sending this note to google, the site started appearing as #1. Maybe they do read those emails.

nope!!! PR is based on your backlinks which you can get from forums, blogs, etc....

Google ranks page not on how well a page is optimized. They rank sites base on the relevancy of the content on the users query this is the major factor. While other factors includes the number of quality backlinks that is pointing to your site which the PR of your site is based.

This is quality directory in Google Algorithm

Keyword density on referring page
Position of link on referrer page
Did user Bookmark page?
Google patent - Bookmark = Good
Site Traffic Google patent - # of visitors, increasing trend = good

Please remember this if you rank well in Google with top 10

nope!!! PR is based on your backlinks which you can get from forums, blogs, etc....

It's not true.You can easy get PR2-Pr3 without backlinks.Yust make a normal website ixternal pages linking

the most important factor in getting high pagerank is the backlink
oneway back link
i don't recommend reciprocal back link
and after backlink fresh content

Well google first take care of Unique content after that give attention to your back link ... so always try to have fresh and user friendly content on your site
