I just want to say that sitemap.xml.gz files do work.
In 4 days we saw results better than we were able to accomplish for a dynamic content site that hadn't been properly indexed in 1.5 years.

I think it's mainly for bigger sites out there. It's a way for google to find all your pages.

Webmaster is helping to crawl site(s) once submitting the site maps to search engine. It gives an additional information regarding your site to Google to crawl the web. It will follow a limited number of links from a page. Thus the site map is necessary to make a use of all content available on the site, if the site is very large.
