Actually, in fact I do both long tail and main keywords promotion.
I found this running parallely works the best.

Usually long tail keyword brings relevant traffic. You can easily target your audience by ranking long tail keywords. It is also easy to rank compare to small keyword.

Although admittedly the traffic is not equal, my best keywords bring in more visitors than the long tail keywords combined, but the long tail keywords still bring in nice revenue.

instead of using short kws or terms which are usually have alot of competitors, the long is more advisable to get ranking more faster.. but still have the targeted kws..
