Hi there. Google made the update to remove and/or reduce low and poor quality sites in their top results. It was first hit the US last February this year. And it affected lots of sites like ezinearticle and prnewswire. Sites that got hit by the update has suffer a lot in their revenue. And if your site is one that got penalize by it, it would better if you create more unique and fresh content for your site. Also, update it regularly. The Update has made because of the 'content farm' issue.

Here you can get a brief idea on Google Panda:
Late February, Google launched a substantial algorithm change (known as “Farmer” or “Panda”) aimed at identifying low-quality pages and sites. These are pages (often seen on so-called “content farms”) with text that is relevant for a query, but may not provide the best user experience. (Google calls it a “high quality sites algorithm”.) Today, Google has rolled this change out to all English language queries and made a few minor updates (with an estimated impact to 2% of U.S. queries).

Its a change by Google in its algorithm for preventing the contents which are low quality or copied from some other sources in order to improve ranking of the site.

Google is experimenting with removing the side ads and has increased the width of the SERP to 600px. Now we have upto 70 characters visible in the title as compared to 56.
