They are not automated, you can't control them, only if you want to allow your site to be crawled or not. As for algorithm, Google will not unveil it, it is very complex mathematical code that can't be understand easily by many people, so they give the ranking guidelines instead.

Google crawling algorithm works as follows -

Search engine crawler visits a web page, reads it, and crawls links to other pages within the website.

Indexes web pages -
Everything that crawler finds is saved in the search engine's index

Algorithm Categorization -
Sorts through the index and returns results based on mathematical calculations.

It's basically a mathematical formula that webmasters continuously try to guess and accordingly set their SEO strategies. But no one can give you the definite structure as Google strictly maintains the secret.

Crawling: Crawling is the process by which Googlebot discovers new and updated pages to be added to the Google index.
Indexing: Googlebot processes each of the pages it crawls in order to compile a massive index of all the words it sees and their location on each page.
Algorithm: Google's algorithm search out the Web pages that contain the keywords you used to search, then assigning a rank to each page based several factors, including how many times the keywords appear on the page. Higher ranked pages appear further up in Google's search engine results page (SERP), meaning that the best links relating to your search query are theoretically the first ones Google lists.

I am looking for some documents on how Google crawl and index content. I read many "light" papers and articles on what you need to do to improve your ranking and make sure your content is properly indexed but I am looking for some more advanced technical documents on how Google crawl and index content.
