Can Internet users develop alternative search engine market?

Is it true that alternative search engine discussions are not mere as hot as Google or Yahoo forum posts?!!? I'd dare to doubt.
Evidently, most of the user's concerns on search enigne quality are linked only to their business promotion. They use the handiest and most popular enignes and get the results. But "I don't care as long as it works" crowd is not the best market driver. Moreover, people who do care can affect those who don't care. An alternative way I can see breaking the indifference is to appeal to those who seek for competitive and free Internet for all.
I have read about a new launched search engine incubator (www.omfica.org) with an open electoral administrative structure. They aim to establish new standards for Internet content indexing and search and develop massive data repository via encouraging internet users to contribute some of their time and computer recources to creation of standardized and well structured data. The good news is that it doesn't require any financial resources. And what's best, its an open access data repository so enigne can use the storage. I think its good start and I see the future of internet in this direction.
