According to google last update , free directory works and paid directory get low ranked

Yes much better than you pay certain paid directory at least it is free. Directory submission can never be bad .

Yes free directory has low rank but sometimes it also work.

Yes! Free directories always work. And now google create a new process to find paid link and band them. And recent update of google, give low rank to paid directories.

Just for the approval of directories eventually it will give your site a good backlinks just select your category properly.

Free directories definitely work. I have done this experiment with one of my sites where backlinks were build exclusively using free directories and the site has PR3 and good SERPs now.

I would say that directories are not as effective as it used to be earlier but they are not dead yet.
