Using directories for an SEO perspective is old news. Get yourself on some of the main ones at the most, like Dmoz, Business.com, etc, but don't worry about it too much. Get yourself backlinks from relevant and respectable websites. Not as easy as it sounds obviously, but using the right techniques it can be achieved. Modern day SEO is about using your brain and not just sticking to a set list of sites then sitting back.

In our experience, most of the hits on our website came from searches. Only about 20% were from referrals. The most referrals to our website came from:
1) Links in articles I placed in the local online newspaper - yourhub.com
2) A listing as a member of our local chamber of commerce
3) Google Adwords

I don't remember seeing many instant approval directories. It would leave the door open for spammers.
