link popularity is the quality of a site that is pointed to other site and link exchange is one way of improving link popularity.

Link Pop, it measures the quantity and quality of site that links or pointing to your site.. You can get high link pop by means of one way link exchange, 2 way link or even reciprocal link exchange.. forums posting, blogging, blog commenting and social bookmarkings..

Link popularity is depends on quality inbound links where as link exchange is a process to exchange links from other sites.

Link popularity refers to no. of back links towards your website. it is not necessary to give link back to each site but in link exchange both site keeps link of each other.

Link popularity is a group of backlinks gathered from different SEs (which is my opinion).
Link exchange is just a process where you exchange your links to build a backlink which may add to your link popularity.

Well, I think Google count social bookmarkings as back links. In fact I use social bookmarkings after I posted at my blog to indexed fast by Google.
