A 301 redirect means that the page has permanently moved to a new location. A 302 redirect means that the move is only temporary.

301 and 302 are the most commonly used redirects. While 301 redirect will move your website URL permanently, 302 is used for a temporary move. These HTTP status codes will be used to display an alternative web page where you want to redirect the site visitor.

301 - Moved permanently to a new location. The client/browser should not try to request the original location but use the new location from now on.
302 - Temporarily located somewhere else, and the client/browser should continue requesting the original URL.
When you set up 301 permanent redirects, the website is able to maintain its search rankings and prevent any plunge in search traffic. But, in the case of 302 redirects, all your efforts you put to improve the ranking are wasted.

To a user they seem to work the same way, but they aren't the same as far as search engines are concerned. Search engines sense the different types of redirects, and handle them differently. A 301 redirect means that the page has permanently moved to a new location. A 302 redirect means that the move is only temporary

redirect 301 means permanently transferring the page to a new location. The client / browser should not continue to query for the original location, but should now use the new location.

Redirect 302 means the page is located somewhere else temporarily, and the client / browser must continue to query the original url.

A 301 redirect means that the page has permanently moved to a new location. A 302 redirect means that the move is only temporary. Search engines need to figure out whether to keep the old page, or replace it with the one found at the new location.
