It really depends on the niche. You have to experiment to find out. Some products only have so many customers you can ever reach, others you can convince almost any one to buy. If your ticket price is high you may be forced to bid on expensive words, but never forget the long tail of cheap words that the competition is over looking. If you offer something slightly different from the competition you don't need to be number one, just in the top three.

I think the best way to increase traffic is to write strong SEO articles and then diligently market it in social bookmarking sites. Just diligently do these two and have a quality content and search engine and people will love your web site. . .
