The file extension doesn't matter, but of course it's better to have a mysite.com/keyword.html than it is to have mysite.com/topic.php?45$&d=1528

You will not get banned in search engines by using mod_rewrite function. It only shortens up your url strings making them easier for search engines to spider and helps out users too! Session ID's are found in dynamic strings like the example mdvaldosta gave with the "=" embedded in the string. Some crawlers will only scan so far or so many session ids, so it helps if you implement a mod_rewrite in order to aid this process along.

You do not need mod_rewrite to have your pages crawled, as search engines will find and index your dynamic urls, but it may take longer and they might not crawl the deep or longer ones.

my website (toonsgig.com) is showing fine results on msn, yahoo, altavista but not show any data on google. i m seeing my old website keywords if type toonsgig what is the reason?
