These are some of the steps to promote

According to me, all these methods are important for promoting your website. All these methods help in getting traffic. This helps in promoting your site. Also place your banner on relevant high quality sites.

1) Articles - Submit articles to free article directories (Note: Dont forget to put your link into it)
2) Directory submissions - Submit your site's URL to high traffic/ PR directories.
3) Link exchange - Negotiate to other related website with high PR to gain PR.
4) Forums posting - Link your website to your forum signature

You are very right, these 4 steps are the most important i totally agree, and forums posting is one of the best way to do that, too bad many forums have introduced nofollow links so that you get no benefit from your postings.
