Well, it's a good thing. Since site speed is naturally important for users, I'm glad that Google also view site speed as an important factor in ranking sites.

Website speed has been one of the vital factors since the beginning. Why? Because users or web surfers tend to be bored in slow loading websites and quickly search another site which loads faster. Just for an example, some people disables javascipts and flash because it slows down the loading.

Well, Website speed do have an effect but only on the users' using experiences, not so much on our sites' ranks or whatever on Google.

I use and recommend everyone to use the Google's Webmaster Tools, it probably one of the best free tools out there to help you achieve higher page ranks and higher search scores.

Google Webmaster Tools also has a tool to check the load speed of a site which in return will help you with your SEO.
