Google says create site for the people and the rest will follow so it means that when you have quality, fresh and relevant content search engines will eventually rank the site higher.

Besides that Social Networks, Bookmarking, Article Directories, etc. will all help as soon as you are focusing on relevant keywords.

1. Submit RSS to RSS directories
2. Add cool videos related to your niche to you tube with a refence to your site
3. Convert your posts to podcasts and submit them to podcast directories

In SEO, I'm more on focusing in off page factors and social media optimization.
