buying links?
I have gotten a proposal from a well known text link buying company to buy/rent text links for a month, or longer. The cost varies from $15.00 per month to $300.00 to $400.00 a month per site. I have read on the forum that Google hates or punishes sites for links that are paid for, and after all, they are purchased to manipulate search engine results, at least that is one of the reasons. Is this practice to be avoided? Some of the sites are high PR, good Alexa rating, and they are relevant to my website.
Any thoughts?
Thanks

There's no problem in buying text links if you'll use them for site visitors/traffic, and not to trick search engines spiders to manipulate rankings...

Buying links is penalised as it is an unnatural way to alter search rankings. Google use links as a kind of voting system to see what sites are recommended. Buying links obviously contradicts this "voting system".
However buying links can be an important promotion technique. So add the nofollow tag to any links and you will have no problems.
If you do want some pr and search engine boost with bought links (which is against google policy) one way to avoid detection is to by links from sites that do not actively promote selling links and are not affiliated with a linkbroker site.
