I think Canonical issue don't have any relation with the PR & ranking of the site, it is just for the page you want to show in SERP listing instead of the page is currently displaying.

If you fail to specify the adjust canonical URL in your website, you will emphatically loose all that you have made in the past few weeks or months since the link value and the PR value will be communicated to the determined site which no longer exists.
