The main application of page rank is pretty much a system google uses to quickly figure out what sites it trusts most to give them high search results.

No one knows exactly how it is calculated, but a few important things to get it high is to get your website's link on other websites (ones with high page ranks are better), keep fresh content and other things that get your site higher on search engines.
