PR dopped on index but increased page with adsense page?

Hi all

I'm new to web design... My home page had a PR2. With some external links.
Another page of mine also had a fair amount of external links... Although it was not a key page for me.

So, I changed the external links so that they all directed users to the index page - and they have to click from there to the 2nd page in question.

I then also added AdSense onto the second page.

So now my home page has lots of quality external links(and no adsense)... a few months down the line my index page has dropped to PR1 and the second page is sitting on PR2... I don't understand how that works??

The index page in question is http://www.pbs-easybooks.com

I'm busy setting up a CSS layout to replace the tables originally used...
So far i've got a good content/code ration, so i'm hoping this will also help.

so the second page is internal page of your site? or is it site.com/index.htm?

they have the same content I think and it is not advisable...

Yes it's an internal page, but they don't have similar content at all.

Actually the one that is ranking has very little content, and no external links?!

Have you checked on both pages the relevancy of your content to the title, description and keyword meta tags?

The page with the less content on it might have bigger relevancy than the page with more content on it.

Well it has very little content. About 2 sentences - although i tried to optimize it for adsense.
Overall my content ratio was bad cause i was using tables, I'm redoing the site with CSS and am using less, more relevant keywords, and splitting my product section into subcategories so as to target specific phrases...
Hope i'm on the right track.

Since you're on your way to splitting products into subcategories, may I suggest some tips. Focusing on the proper names of your new pages (I'm pretty sure you know that, just remindings). Use your targeting keywords when you name URL. If you need to use the phrase of two keywords, remember to use hyphens but not underscores. Try to avoid the deep subcategories when it's possible. Hope it helps.

came across those suggestions yesterday.

What would be the max recommended lenght for a URL?

My main product is accounting software? would /accounting-software.htm be too long?
Would that long URL help at all?

I think /accounting-software.htm would be perfect, the only think I should point is, don't place your htm file deep into subdirectories. Remember, the files which are closer to the root have preferences.
