Website gone from 1st page, and only in Google

Hi,

We have two websites which are both promoting the same thing (one aimed at British market and one at American, as they use different phrases). They were both ranking well, but suddenly one disppeared from the google searches for 'four poster bed' etc.

The site that has stayed number one was an updated version of the ones that has disappeared- is it likely that:
1. Another company suggested this second site was a duplicate and reported us.
2. Having too similar page names has meant that google has removed the site (nothing come up in our webmaster account with google though).
3. Just got missed off from last crawl and not been included (thought it was this, but it has been gone for a couple of weeks, so unsure)
4. Something I haven't thought of.

The site that has gone 'missing' was in need of an overhaul, but would just like to know likely cause before starting work on it.

First of all, you should check if the other site is still indexed by Google, It might be moved into different page by it's search. Depending on if the site is still indexed you should use different approaches.

It's not clear if both of your sites have duplicate content. If you are not sure, try copyscape to check it. It's better not to use duplicate content, your site will not be punushed so much, but it's SERP can be reduced.

As you say, your site disappeared from the last crowl, it doesn't mean anything. It might come back soon by itself. But, if you suspect you did something wrong, you'd rather go back and check what could be the problem. If you are not sure what you did wrong, let this forum know what's your suspect, most likely you'll get an answer.

I went through search engines yesterday doing a rank check. It only appears to be two phrases (four poster bed and four poster beds) where it no longer ranks- other ones we check for, like 'pencil post bed' and 'canopy bed' are still fine in google.


Having not done much to the site recently, I wondered if that was the prob, rather than doing something- I will use copyscape to check it and go from there.

It looks like the competition for the phrase "four poster bed" and "four poster beds" is bigger than for "pencil post bed" and "canopy bed". Have you checked the number of results SERP returns for those phrases? If the SERP result is bigger, then it's less chances to get into the better search page.

You didn't specify your web addresses you are talking about. May be it will be easyer to answer your questions. BTW, why won't you put our site into the forum signature, that will bring you some benefits.
