Google wants its search results to contain relevant and important link. one way text link from relevant pages continue to be the most valuable links.
Google does not update their backlink index as frequent as their search results.

Like what guinanie says, google shows only relevant and just random backlinks..

To get a more accurate view of what links google has for you....type ::www.yourdomain.com in the search box...

Google only consider quality backlinks that is PR of backlink page, theme of backlink page...................

a link that has a nofollow attribute is not recognized as backlink in google...

Well, If you want to see how many back links Google counts for your site you may visit at http://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/. Its update by Google by-weekly. The query with link:www.yourdomain.com show a dummy value.

hey. I've been using google's webmaster tools for a while now and get a number of external links there... also get quite a few with that :www.yourdomain.com query

How does this differ from using the google toolbar or another SEO tool to check backlinks. Is it the same thing?
