They are useful if the forum allows dofollow links, other than that forums can drive you good traffic because most forums allow members to leave signature links or personal profile links. If you make quality contributions some people will follow these links and potentially read your site.

forum links are a nice reward for active forum members & should not be abused. Leaving them dofollow can also encourage the community to grow. I have noticed a lot of blogs/forums become stagnant after adding the NOFOLLOW ATTRIBUTE

Forum links can also help get a website indexed in the Search engines faster.

Just do not spam as it is easy to spot & remove.
