I have seen others swear that if you don't create a real profile with friends, and activity then you can actually get penalized. Anyone have input to this?

^Don't use any automated tools. Manual submission is still better. Social bookmarking is such an easy and fast method to boost the traffic of your site. You can also get tons of backlinks from it.
