What defines a competitive keyword? I am slowly learning how to do SEO and i found out that i really need to change almost all of my keywords. So, I want to know what is considered "competitive" because i don't want to jump into a keyword that i cant compete in.
Is it the number of searches per day that makes it competitive?
Or is it the number of results the pop up that make it competitive?
Here are some keywords and the approximate number of searches per day it has.
Custom pillows - 103
custom leather pillows - 60
decorative throw pillows - 125
decorative pillows - 364
decorative accent pillows - 74
throw pillows - 315
leather pillows - 103
leather throw pillows - 116
designer pillows - 81
Do these seem competitive? The keywords i have now are definately not working, and absolutely drive no traffic to my site. Modern pillows, contemporary pillows, etc...
Please help someone...

The way I choose keywords is using the search engines themselves, and using overture keyword selector.
I find a keyword with high traffic (accordign to overture)
I search google for competitive keywords and see how many pages im competing with.
If you want to define "competitve keywords", you cant. Its how much time you spend on SEO for your site = what level of competitive you mean.
If you want to spend 1 hour a week, and no money, and keyword like "rubber band powered refrigerator baltimore maryland east side tunnel" might be easy to take. It prolly doesnt get too many hits tho.
If you want to be competitve, look at other sites, and check out how much SEO they have for your keywords (start at the top of the google search results), and see if you think you can match them.
If the page is optimized like crap, and has a low pagerank, those keywords might be easier to take.
