I have seen on Ebay that you can purchase text links on the home pages of some very high page rank sites, some are as high as 8 for $10 - $40 per month, I was wondering if this would increase our Google page rank and if anyone has tried this method???

I would suggest you to have relevant high PR backlinks, try to get them naturally don't buy them, if you have many backlinks from sites which are not related to your site then those links would be of no use to you instead spiders will treat them as spam links and you may get banned.

Definitely getting natural links is the ideal way. However buying links from relevant websites would also help your rankings. Also reciprocal linking with relevant websites is positive. The key is that the inbound links are relevant with your activity, otherwise it can be understood as a try of inflating your popularity, which can end in a penalty.

Try to get links the natural way. If you use directories be sure they are relevant to your site. For example. If you have a site about ebay auctions like the one I have below then you would want only ebay relevant sites linking to and from. Don't buy links. I have found people will sometimes use a nofollow tag when they add a link on their site.
