Page rank is definitely important because SEO is totally dependent on page rank. If page rank increases than only we can say that seo is working..

the pagerank is very important for the website, the high PR that's to mean your website is good. if the website not to have the good content or the high quality backlinks the page rank will be droped

When you keep on building quality links then your PR will increase too. So PR is only a guide or a measure to tell that your having a quality links.. And it's one of the best asset of a website if you're going to exchange link from other site.
