Blogs gives you more backlinks.

Directories gives you more search engine traffic.

So both are best in SEO.

Doing work in directory and blog proved a good seo techniques in achieving a serp rank and page rank, As both directly provide one way link. But One important thing is how to do a right seo for directory and blog.

I don't understand is this the link building question or is it about building a website?

From both SEO and website designing point of view, I choose Blog. Here's why:

1. Because blogging provides informative content that needs to be updated every now and then, while directories are just list of websites we, professionals, use to build links.

2. Blogging drives a lot of traffic, usually targetted ones, which is better than categorizing your website and leave it that way,

3. A lot of things can be blogged. It depends on how you present your article. Directories include Articles but usually don't have formatting. Readers will get easily bored with it.

Depends on what you are tying to accomplish. SEO is not about one or the other it's about a combination of everything. why not a blog and a directory spider-ed together? how about a forum, blog and directory? We use all the tools available to generate traffic and recommend that to all our clients. that said if you have to pick one a blog is far superior to a directory, it seos better and is far more social than a directory..

I like directory, so directory is the best.
