Why is "nofollow" used?

on checking backlinks on some of the sites which are listed on top of SERP, I found that many of their backlinks were no-follow. Does that mean that no-follow links actually add PR juice which people used to think they don't ? Your input appreciated. Thanks.

When you add the nofollow attribute to a link google robot does not follow that link or pass a significant amount of weight of PR from your site. These nofollows are commonly seen on blogs where you can make comments, it is used to prevent spammers trying to gain some PR weight.

A "nofollow" link is still counted as a back link. Just build your links naturally. Post informative replies to forums so that you'll get back links and help others at the same time.

If it can stop spamming there is chance that even a good comment makes won't come and comment on your blog or site because the search engine don't follow the link and don't index. What is the HTML code can anyone tell me?

It's used in order to prevent back links from other sites to your sites specifically for unwanted mails on your website .

In my point of view nofollow is used to make your page faster then the oters if some extra object are distrebe in your site then the admistator should make these page as nofollow or the link no follow.....

Situations in which no follow is handy:

Use NoFollow when linking out to you Feedburner RSS feed.

Google or other search engine cannot read the data contents of any site with nofollow attribute if they want to keep them private on the other hand it is just a traffic source its not effect on your PR.
