It really depends on your goal. If you want long-term benefits, SEO should be done. For those who want immediate results, SEM would be perfect.

Hi
SEO stands for search engine optimization. In its simplest form SEO is the process of tailoring a website (text, titles, meta tags, alt tags, etc) so that the search engines will assign a good rank to the site for specific search terms.
Vested interests appear to use the expression SEM to mean exclusively Pay per click advertising to the extent that the wider advertising and marketing community have accepted this narrow definition.

No SEM campaign is complete without seo. Moreover, since the purpose of seo is to make the site better for both search engine and user, you may find that it will suffice on its own.

SEO means Search Engine Optimization and SEM means Search Engine Marketing. The two are not identical. SEM is the approach when advertising in the media while the optimization approach is more advertising. SEM is paid advertising and SEO is SEO or free.

The same is true for search engine optimization. For many people, the term is new, and have no idea what it is not an SEO. There are a lot of useful information and a lot of misinformation floating around regarding search engine optimization (SEO) and Search Engine Marketing (SEM). SEO, Search Engine Optimization, the main purpose to promote sites in the TOP10 in SERP to attract visitors for your keywords.

SEO: SEO is the process of tailoring a website (text, titles, meta tags, alt tags etc...) so that search engines will assign a good rank to the sites for the specific search terms. Search engines introducing fees for guaranteed inclusion in their indices, directories charging for reviews and the emergence of PPC listings, SEO now has an element of media buying mixed in.

SEM: The SEM is meant to be both a tutorial and a general information resource. If you frequent other prominent SEM resources you will find that this tutorial, like most search engine promotion sites, tends to go over the same ground. This is because there are no secrets to successful search engine positioning - just experience, a lot of research and tons of hard work.

If you want a quick result, I suggest going for SEM. SEO is a long term investment. It requires a lot more efforts also. So while doing SEM you can do SEO in parallel. Hope it clears. If you want to learn more you can always ask question in this forum or other websites such as Quora. Here is my personal link in Quora. You can go through the answers there.
