Since I have been working with the SEO industry for a long time now, I know quite a few things about SEO. SMO is the one area of which my knowledge is quite weak. SMO stands for Social Media Optimization is only thing I know. Social media optimization belongs to the broad online marketing strategy just like search engine optimization. Why is it used is what I would like to know. Does anyone know of the benefits of SMO? Is there some way in which it helps a website? For my online business, SEO has done some really great things. Did you have a typo in your question? Did you mean to say SEM and not SMO???

SMO is really just using social media sites to attract visitors to your website. Engage your audience through promotions, special deals and prizes to drive traffic to your website. For example, I think it was Digg who teamed up with someone else and they gave away custom iPads each day for a week for people who retweeted something that they specified... SMO also should involve your website having buttons or quick ways for visitors to press a button and shoots your web page over to all their favorite social media sites. It helps get your content out to the masses.

SEM is Search Engine Marketing. I like to think of SEM as being a subset of SEO... To me, SEM involves forking over money to show up in the search engines such as paying for online advertising, Google AdWords or paying for links...

Straight up SEO is more of an organic approach where your site stands tall on its own merits without needing to pay for people to visit your site and SEM is a paid approach.

A good hybrid of the two really helps in a website's success without breaking the bank.
