Upgrading website with excellent rankings

I have a website that i will be upgrading/rennovating to a fresher look keeping the same content and adding as well, the site has great rankings will I sacrifice, what are the right steps to maintain and not loose what has been rewarded by the search engines....Also if I were to build a new site same content plus allot more content to the site from a .net domain name using same name is this a good idea,

any critical feed back is greatly appreciated

Just maintain the content of your site. No major changes.. except maybe the navigational links.

It doesn't hurt much but just continue promoting your site. You can also provide additional contents on your new pages.
