Actually, before PR really important. However, at this point it doesn't matter at all. Even you have a low PR, you can still rank high in Google as long as you do effective SEO campaign.

Unless and until Google officially mentions it, I won't take anyone else's word for it that Page Rank will be canceled. At the most, some changes might be incorporated in it. Page rank as of now, is still very important, as it is a clear indicator of the quality of the site according to Google's parameters.

I can't find any reasons why Google will cancel PR issue. But if they do, I think Pagerank will be useless because as of now, many SEO experts are saying that we should focus on traffic and not on pagerank.
