What is the ideal method for count the Backlinks

Hello,
Some time back link count is very confusing for me.
when i check back link of my site by any online tools it shows numbers of back links and when i check back link according Google search query like-link:www.mysitename.com it shows 1,2 back link.
so why this happens and what is difference between this two.
please help me.

I have found google webmaster tools to be a good program to check the backlinks. Sign up for webmaster tools and in that you have under traffic --> sites Linking to your site.

Google webmaster tool, Spy glass, backlinkwatch.com and ahrefs.com are the best to count back links for your websites.
