I have recently read an article, suggesting that unrelated links achieved through reciprocal linking (link swapping), is an out of date strategy, and as search engine algorithms become more sophisticated, unrelated links maybe frowned upon as much as link farms. Is this true?

it will bring you if too much...

exchanging links with unrelated sites i think will also count as backlinks but with poor points and less quality backlinks

I agree with the posts since not only your content position your site in the cyber space but the links and not only the incomings, but the outgoing as well. If you want to increase your relevance for a certain keyphrase all you need is to go for backlinks from relevant sites and link to your niche.

Always try to keep your links related to your niche.

One way links is the best option.

I dont think it will actually hurt you. I just think that it won't help enormously. It shouldnt hurt you otherwise people could post your link all over unrelevant sites to screw you up.

I don't think links from unrelated sites will do harm to your site. But it's true that these links won't add too much value to it.

I think if u got links from related site then it is more useful and counts the value more.

If my PR is 3 and a website that has lower PR wants to link with me and visa versa is it still worth me exchanging links or not

Links should be related sites.Oneway links are good.

In my mind, reciprocal links also have value, but less than links from related site.

Reciprocal link is not an out of date strategy and it is still part of a link building strategies. Link farm is spamming if you used the link exchange automated programs and services and link that is not related to your site. It is important to evaluate the link before adding it to your site.
