Yes blogs are very useful for SEO.If you want to increase PageRank of a website then you create a blog and put some good content and also put some text links back to your site.

Aside from having backlinks, Blog is also one good way in doing SEO because blog is always up to date and has a fresh content which is favorite to crawl by the bots.. So when your blog is on the right track and has a good rankings in SERP's it will surely boost your traffic because of the links/anchor text attach to it pointing to your site..
