Get as many backlinks from higher rated sites as possible. It might as well take 1-2 years to get on top

Search Engine Optimization - A Hour A Day by Grappone and Couzin.

Hmm, you may have to find a good domain name, make sure you submit your site to google if you're not already indexed.

Some sites take years to get ranked atleast number 5, while it only takes others only a matter of months. So just do your best and with enough backlinks and patience you'll be up there.

One way is to download the Google toolbar - select customize and then page rank. It will then show the PR of every site you visit.

Also, visit http://popuri.us/ for site stats.
